Snow shovelers needed, get paid the day you work (New Haven)

compensation: Up to $15. per hour-Get paid the day you work

Property Management company needs physically fit individuals to work on our New Haven snow clearing crew and earn $15 per hour. Text show contact info with the time you can meet at 1399 State Street in New Haven where we begin.

We usually meet at 7AM sharp on the morning after it snows. You must live within 20 minutes of 1399 State Street in New Haven to qualify for this. Not far from the Hess Gas Station. We meet in the rear of the building. You will see us plowing there.

You need to wear warm gloves, shoes & clothing. Bring extra pair of dry socks & gloves. Bring liquid to drink and a snack because we may not stop for those things.

HERE'S HOW TO SHOVEL FOR US: Shoveling requires you to use common sense, be physically fit, and able to follow instructions. If you tire quickly, are not physically fit or perform poorly, we will not be able to have you work on our snow crew.

A few things to remember when shoveling snow:

1. Don't walk on the snow. Matting it down makes it more difficult to move.

2-Start at the top of the stairs/highest point first so you can thro the snow onto an un-shoveled area. Clean off cars next;

3-Begin closest to the structure you want to clear the snow away from and provide access to.

4-Don't move snow twice. Before you even take your first scoop, ASK where we'd like it placed. We expect you to be able to toss a full snow shovel of snow at least 10'.

5-Don't make piles higher than 12". That way the snow thrower can assist in moving the snow.

6. Don't throw the snow onto areas already cleared.

7-Use 2 hands and use your leg muscles as much as possible - push snow when you can and use your legs to lift when you can't push it.

a. Keep your back straight as you move from the squat position to the upright position.
b. Use your shoulder muscles as much as possible.
c. Hold the snow shovel as close to your upper body as possible.
d. Keep one hand close to the shovel blade for better leverage.
e. Don't twist your upper body as you throw snow.

8. Keep hydrated. Bring water with you.

Programs / Operations: Collaborate with program staff, and plan, organize, schedule, train, direct, supervise, and evaluate program participants pursuant to occupancy agreements and program goals including house rules and the care and maintenance of grounds and facilities (e.g. building operations and procedures, custodial tasks, yard maintenance, trash and snow removal, etc. Minimum Job Requirements Must have a basic understanding of Columbus Houses' mission, homelessness, substance abuse, and mental health, and the unassisted and unrestricted ability to: move independently throughout Columbus House/Sojourner's Place and the City of New Haven; perform manual labor in varied assignments; lift and carry as much as 35 pounds safely; do extensive walking, bending, stooping, reaching; use hands to perform fine manipulation and safely use maintenance tools and equipment. Must have a valid driver's license and good driving history. Must be reliable and capable of accepting supervision. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required Requires skill, knowledge, and experience, pursuant to: safe work practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions involved in general property security, grounds and maintenance work; safe and efficient operation, use, and maintenance of a variety of basic hand tools and equipment; chemicals and other products used to perform routine maintenance and custodial work; recognize failures pursuant to electrical, plumbing, HVAC and other equipment and building components; Sufficient skill, knowledge, experience and ability to work collaboratively with program staff, lead program participants and others both as a supervisor and in a technical capacity to plan, organize, schedule, assign, direct, supervise, counsel, train, assist and evaluate the work of program participants, volunteers and other semi-skilled workers. Requires skill, knowledge, and experience to execute oral and written instructions; read, write, make, and maintain legible reports and records; maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, building occupants, volunteers, public officials, visitors, etc; and work independently or cooperatively as a member of a team.
