*Pantry Assistant:

Food In Service to the Homebound (FISH) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to delivering free nutritious groceries to qualifying homebound low-income individuals throughout the Greater New Haven area who are experiencing food insecurity. FISH looks to provide food assistance to its clients for either temporary or indefinite service and serves approximately 2,000 individuals per month. FISH is also an equal opportunity workplace. Our team is looking to hire a motivated, teachable, and team-oriented individual with strong multitasking and interpersonal skills who is physically suited for warehouse work for the role of
Pantry Assistant (PA). The role of PA is very physical (75% of workload is physical). It requires a lot of moving, lifting, and repetitive motions. The PA will report directly to the Program Co-
Managers and will collaborate with other key team members, volunteers, and interns to ensure that the day-to-day warehouse responsibilities and procedures for grocery delivery service are executed in an efficient and timely matter. The PA will occasionally be scheduled to make grocery deliveries to clients of FISH using their own personal vehicle in which they will be reimbursed for gas mileage.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Engages with volunteers by providing instruction and training on their daily assignments.
  • Assists with breaking down food pallets, stocking inventory, replenishing items, sorting donations, packing grocery bags, and making grocery deliveries to clients.
  • Ensures that clients’ grocery delivery orders are fulfilled, meet pantry food safety consumption guidelines, and are properly staged for distribution.
  • Reports inventory shortages to program management.
  • Weighs, records, and sorts in-kind food donations from food drives and retail providers.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment and storage areas in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Executes additional tasks and projects as directed by program management.

Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience in food pantry, nonprofit, or social work settings is a plus.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • MUST have a valid driver’s license, appropriate insurance coverage, and can use personal vehicle for making grocery deliveries. Mileage reimbursement will be provided when using personal vehicle for making grocery deliveries.
  • MUST have proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
  • MUST be physically suited for warehouse work. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Excellent at multitasking, can prioritize and quickly pivot on tasks when directed by management, and works well in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrates they can receive corrective criticism and obey instructions when directed by management.
  • Works well both independently and in group settings.
  • Familiarity with Cognito Forms is a plus but is not essential to this position.

Salary and Benefits:

  • This is a Monday through Friday, part-time, 20 - 25 hours per week inhouse position at our warehouse in Fair Haven, New Haven. Starting pay is $15 an hour. Wages are paid weekly via direct deposit.
  • Receive 13 days of accrued PTO per year in addition to 11 paid federal holidays.
