Maintenance/Program Support (FT/PT) - Friends Center for Children (New Haven)

Friends Center is an early childhood education center providing year-round, full-time care for children ages 3 months to 5 years. We offer a child-centered, hands-on learning experience in a safe and nurturing environment. At the Center, children learn through creative play and a wide range of developmentally-appropriate activities. We are a non-sectarian organization whose value-based curriculum is guided and enhanced by its foundations in the Quaker principles of community, equality, peace, simplicity, truth and stewardship. As a cooperative organization, parents and teachers at the Center work together to create a diverse and supportive community. Reports to: Executive Director and Site Director

Classification: Non-Exempt

Hours: FT

Salary Range: $15 per hour, dependent on qualifications

Position Summary: The Program Support is responsible for supporting the Business and Facilities Manager with daily facility and inventory tasks. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to customer service, administrative support, welcome desk administration, and assisting with setting up events. The Program Support person participates fully in the culture and professionalism of Friends Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

*Customer Service -

  • Serve as the face of the school, including providing excellent front-facing customer service in person and via phone
  • Act as first point of contact for customers entering the building, greet visitors and families
  • Arrive on time and ready to receive staff, children, and families
  • Assist a wide variety of customers including parents, children, teachers, staff, interns, vendors, and volunteers with a range of needs

*Supporting the Administrative Team -

  • Take inventory of food and supply needs each week
  • Manage intake and distribution of deliveries
  • Assist with projects or tasks as assigned with little direct supervision
  • Keep off-site inventory binders up to date
  • Keep off- site storage units organized
  • Assist with building maintenance

*Front Desk Administration -

  • Inventory, organize and distribute office supplies for the administrative offices and classrooms

(Staples)

  • Maintain and tidy staff room daily
  • Collect mail from the mailbox daily and mail outgoing mail pieces
  • Receive all deliveries
  • Errands as needed

*Communication:

  • Acts as the primary greeter each day as children and families come into and leave Friends Center

(depending on shift hours)

  • Communicate with all administrative and teaching staff daily
  • Share conversations and interactions with families with the administrative staff and teachers in a confidential and sensitive manner

*Events and Other Tasks: Other duties as requested

*KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and must possess the following minimum qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED, Associate's or Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Must have a driver’s license and independent transportation for doing errands
  • Experience in a support position, preferably at an early childhood educational institution
  • Communicate fluently in written and spoken English
  • Passionate about the mission and vision of the center, including Quaker values
  • Ability to interact with young children in the center
  • Self-motivated, proactive, resourceful and creative problem solver
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to meet deadlines
  • Friendly and professional with good time management skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to produce accurate information in the most efficient manner possible
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing
  • Comfortable proactively learning new technology and suggesting technology-related solutions
  • Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Vision and hearing within normal range so as to be able to provide sight and sound supervision.
  • Ability to lift and carry 40 lbs.
  • Traveling up/down a flight of stairs, standing and sitting for long durations, typing for continuous hours on a computer keyboard, and reading information on a computer screen

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $15.00 - $16.00 per hour
