Specialty Cheese Clerk (FT/PT) - Elm City Market (NEW HAVEN)

Full Job Description:

- Purpose:

The purpose of this position is to assist the Cheese Supervisor with the maintenance of a successful Cheese Department. This includes, but is not limited to, customer service, production, organization, rotation, and cleanliness.

- Work Environment:

This position will perform functions in retail, warehouse, and kitchen environments.

- Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 80 pounds safely.
  • Familiarity with natural foods and alternative diets.
  • Good communication, teamwork, and listening skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow through on commitments.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Attention to detail and good organizational abilities.
  • Ability to handle multiple demands and work under pressure.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to be flexible and to adapt to changing conditions quickly.
  • Willingness to be open to learn and take on new responsibilities.
  • Excellent attendance.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow through on commitments.
  • Retail food service experience preferred along with knife skills.
  • Specialty Cheese knowledge is a plus but not a requirement.

- Responsibilities:

  • Customer Service
  • Ensure efficient, informative, and friendly service according to established customer service vision and standards.
  • Be familiar with company policies and products in order to answer customer questions. Refer unresolved questions or problems to Cheese Supervisor.
  • Take ownership of a problem and seek out proper solutions.
  • Anticipate customer concerns and address the issue before it happens.
  • Safety
  • Ensure that department shelves, displays, aisles and storage areas are in clean, orderly condition, meeting health department standards.
  • Follow all safety practices and procedures; encourage others to practice safe behaviors as well.
  • Make food quality and sanitation a priority.
  • Store Operations
  • Cut, wrap, label and rotate various specialty cheeses and accoutrements.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization throughout production.
  • Maintain a constant attention to detail.
  • Understand ordering procedures, inventory, and cost control.
